Is Silver Safe for Babies? Spoons, Bowls and Kolusu Explained
By Muhammed Thahir
·

Silver spoons, bowls and kolusu are a long-standing Tamil custom for babies, and most families use them without trouble. We could not verify any health benefit from the sources we read, and the one US health agency page we opened does not study baby spoons. For daily feeding, ask your paediatrician.
What tradition says
In many Tamil homes a baby gets a silver set at birth or at the naming ceremony. The set often has a spoon, a kinnam (bowl), a thattu (plate) and a tumbler, and the first spoonful of rice at annaprasanam (soru oottal) is often given with the silver spoon.
Grandmothers will tell you that silver keeps a baby cool or healthy. We respect the custom. It is a belief handed down in families, and we cannot prove it, so we do not sell silver on a health promise.
What the evidence says
We checked one official source, and it does not show that silver spoons help or harm a baby. The ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, US) ToxFAQs page on silver is general and about 12 years old, so it does not answer a parent's exact question.
The page says people can take in small amounts of silver from air, food and water. It describes argyria, a blue-gray skin discolouration, as the result of long-term high-level exposure. It says argyria is permanent but "appears to be a cosmetic problem that may not be otherwise harmful to health." It also says skin contact with silver can cause mild allergic reactions in some people.
The page does not talk about metallic silver spoons, bowls or jewellery on their own, and it does not mention babies. A baby eating from a silver spoon is far from the workplace or supplement exposure the page is mostly about, but the page does not measure that, and we will not claim it does.
How to read health claims about silver online
Many websites say a silver spoon fights germs or builds immunity. Look for the source behind such a sentence. If it names a study on babies using spoons, read it. If it names nothing, treat it as a family saying.
Some posts mix up silver spoons with silver supplements or liquids sold as health products. Those are different things from a spoon in a baby's mouth, and a spoon page should not borrow their claims. When in doubt, a short question to your paediatrician is worth more than any blog, including this one.
What 92.5 silver means for a spoon
Sterling silver marked 92.5 is 92.5 parts silver mixed with other metal, commonly copper. Pure silver is very soft, so a spoon or bowl made of it would bend and dent in daily use.
That is why baby spoons, kinnam and thattu are made in 92.5. If a shop offers you a "pure" silver spoon at a very low price, ask what the metal is and what the bill says. Silver bars are different: ours are sold by weight as 99% pure, and they are meant for saving, not for feeding.
Silver spoons and bowls
A silver spoon or kinnam is a solid metal utensil, so the practical points are mostly about quality and care. Ask for 92.5 sterling silver, check that the edges are smooth, and pick a spoon that fits a small mouth.
Our Baby Silver Spoon is listed at 10 g, and the Silver Kinnam (Baby Bowl) at 40 g. Sample prices today are about ₹3,400 and ₹13,500. Silver prices change daily, and the shop confirms the exact price on WhatsApp.
Wash them in warm water with mild soap, rinse well and dry. Silver darkens slowly with air and food, and that is normal. For pieces that touch the baby's mouth, we suggest skipping strong polishes.
Silver kolusu, chains and kaapu
Silver worn on the body raises different questions from silver used for eating. The main ones are skin reaction and physical safety, such as a loose bell or a chain around the neck.
If you pick a kolusu, a plain design with soldered bells is easier to trust than one with small detachable parts. See the Baby Silver Kolusu with Ghungroo Bells or the Baby Silver Chain. Many parents take chains off at night. If the skin turns red or itchy, remove the piece and ask your doctor.
What to ask before you choose
Ask about metal, weight and finish, because these are things a jeweller can answer honestly. The answers help you compare shops without relying on health claims.
- Is the piece 92.5 sterling silver, and is that written on the bill?
- What is the exact weight, and is it a single piece or a pair?
- Are all joins smooth, with no sharp edges or gaps?
- Does it have small parts that could come loose?
- Can I exchange it later, and how is old silver valued?
Our advice as a jeweller
Buy silver as a gift and a keepsake, and to ask their paediatrician about daily feeding. If a doctor says to stop using a piece, follow the doctor, and bring the piece to us if you would like to exchange it.
Our baby range is grouped under Baby Silver, with ready sets in Baby Silver Sets. If you want to gift a set, our baby silver set in Thanjavur page lists what is available.

Frequently asked questions
Can I feed my baby with a silver spoon every day?
Many families use a silver spoon for the first rice feeding and then keep it for occasional use. We are jewellers, not doctors, so for daily use ask your paediatrician what they advise for your child.
Is 92.5 silver different from pure silver for a baby spoon?
Sterling silver at 92.5 is silver mixed with other metal, usually copper, to make it hard enough for daily objects. Pure silver is very soft. Spoons and bowls are normally made in 92.5 for this reason.
What if my baby has a skin allergy?
A health agency page we read says silver on the skin can cause mild reactions such as rash in some people. If your baby's skin turns red under a kolusu or chain, take it off and speak to your doctor.
Should a baby wear a silver chain or kolusu while sleeping?
Many parents remove chains and anything with small parts at night so nothing can catch or be chewed. Plain kolusu with soldered bells and no loose pieces are the easier choice.
How do I clean a silver baby spoon or bowl?
Wash it in warm water with a little mild soap, rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh polish on pieces the baby puts in the mouth.
Do you give a certificate for silver baby items?
The shop sells 92.5 sterling silver jewellery and articles, and can tell you the weight and purity of any piece on WhatsApp. Hallmarking rules for gold are separate and are covered in our BIS hallmark guide.
